This special session will explore the latest breakthroughs in glucose monitoring systems, focusing on the integration of minimally invasive sensors, artificial intelligence (AI), and emerging non-invasive technologies. Topics will include real-time continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), closed-loop artificial pancreas systems, and the convergence of multi-analyte sensing with predictive analytics for personalized care.

Furthermore, the session will highlight cutting-edge research on optical, bioimpedance, and near-infrared (NIR) techniques for non-invasive glucose estimation, as well as the role of big data and machine learning in enhancing accuracy and usability. Abstract: Robots can precisely control position, velocity, acceleration, trajectory, torque and force, making these intelligent machines well-suited to perform complex tasks within tight specifications and requirements in any environment. They also have the potential to work as standalone systems, performing tasks autonomously or in local collaboration with humans, or even remotely, for instance using haptic interfaces. These amazing capabilities make them suitable for use in the operating room and other hospital facilities, such as physiotherapy clinics, with significant advantages, but also with major challenges, as human bodies do not have a standard size, reference points, or a constant external shape, like industrial counterparts.

This Special Session explores cutting-edge advancements in robotic-assisted surgery, intelligent automation in healthcare, and their role in enhancing precision, safety, and efficiency within operating rooms and physical therapy settings. Topics include the design and deployment of surgical robots, clinical outcomes, applications of both soft and hard robots, collaborative human-robot systems, haptics for sensing feedback, future trends, and interoperability with existing medical technologies. The session aims to bring together researchers, clinicians, and industry experts to discuss the challenges, innovations, and ethical considerations that are shaping the next generation of surgical care.

SS3 Cognitive environments for Healthcare and Well-being

Abstract: Cognitive environments are context-aware spaces enhanced with artificial intelligence capabilities that actively sense, interpret, and respond to the needs of individuals. By integrating heterogeneous sensing technologies, ranging from wearable and environmental sensors to vision-based and multimodal systems, these environments continuously gather and process contextual information.

This allows them to deliver highly personalised and adaptive support, making them particularly valuable in healthcare and well-being scenarios where user needs, conditions, and behaviours can vary significantly over time. In this special session, we will explore the sensing, processing, and analytical frameworks that enable the creation of robust cognitive environments tailored to healthcare and well-being. Of particular interest are personalised sensing approaches for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), where unobtrusive monitoring and intelligent interpretation of daily activities can promote independence, safety, and early detection of health-related issues.

Also, the session will address advances in smart mirrors, which are interactive systems capable of integrating AI-driven services such as real-tim physiological measurement, behavioural analysis, personalised feedback, and support for mental and physical well-being. These smart interfaces illustrate how everyday objects can become intelligent gateways to personalised healthcare. Furthermore, we will examine cognitive assistants grounded in ambient intelligence and contextual awareness. These assistants leverage continuous sensing and reasoning to deliver proactive, user-centric support, ranging from guided rehabilitation and well-being coaching to adaptive reminders and assistance in complex care pathways.

Overall, this special session aims to highlight innovative methods, technologies, and applications that advance personalised, adaptive, and human-centric healthcare solutions through next-generation cognitive environments.

SS4 Digital Transformation in Healthcare

Abstract: Digital Transformation in Healthcare is a special session that focuses on technologies and human factors, such as the education in this field related to trends in digital applications for healthcare and wellbeing. The special session aims to take a multidisciplinary approach to technology, research and development and education in the digital transformation context. It is expected that the solutions regarding education in this dynamic field including the identification and understanding of problems from a technological, social, medical, and legal, as well as, financial perspective, will be addressed in the submitted articles. In this session, we welcome the presentation of digital health education initiatives that include technologies essential for the training of healthcare professionals involved in the digital transformation in their institutions.

The innovation and detection of new Digital Health opportunities, as well as the relation between medical measurement solutions and the new capabilities of the professionals working in the field of healthcare, are considered.

Paper submissions on all areas of digital transformation are welcome, with a focus not only on technological solutions, but also on the way of training of the new healthcare digital transformation professionals.

The special session will also address the participation of PI and members of international project research teams in sharing their experiences on professional training in the field of digital health transformation, as well as new technologies that can ensure quick and effective transformation of healthcare services for higher quality at reduced costs.
